Why the Maldives

The Maldives is a country built for diving, but not for budget diving. Everything you eat, drink, sleep on or breathe through arrives by boat or seaplane. That cost flows through to your dive bill, and it is the single most important thing to understand before booking. A week in the Maldives runs 2-3x what the same week costs in Thailand or the Philippines. What you get back is large pelagic encounters most other destinations cannot match — mantas in feeding aggregations, whale sharks year-round, and at Fuvahmulah, schools of scalloped hammerheads and tiger sharks on routine dives.

Two ways to dive here:

• Resort-based. You stay at a single island resort with an in-house dive centre. The dive sites you reach are whatever sits within an hour of that one atoll. Costs roughly $300-500/night for the resort plus $80-130 per dive. Good for couples mixing diving with beach time, families, and anyone who wants their evenings on land.
• Liveaboard. A dive boat is your hotel for 5-10 nights and covers multiple atolls. Costs $2,500-7,000 per person for the full trip, all-inclusive. Maximises dive time and site variety. Best for committed divers who want 3-4 dives per day and don’t mind a small cabin.

When to go

Two monsoons, and they matter:

• Northeast monsoon (December-April). Drier, calmer, better visibility on the west side of atolls. This is high season — premium prices, busier sites. Plankton accumulates on the east side, so manta and whale shark action moves there.
• Southwest monsoon (May-November). Wetter, more wind, somewhat lower visibility on the east. Mantas and whale sharks feed on the west side, and the famous Hanifaru Bay manta feeding aggregation runs June-November in Baa Atoll. Lower prices, fewer boats.

Cyclones are rare this close to the equator, but May-November sees the most unsettled weather in the north. The central atolls stay diveable year-round.

Atoll breakdown

• North Malé. Closest to the airport, easiest first trip. Mix of channel dives, wrecks (HP Reef, Manta Point Lankan), and house reefs. Good for newer divers and shorter holidays.
• South Malé. Channel diving with grey reefs, eagle rays and seasonal mantas. Stronger currents than North Malé. Cocoa Corner and Kandooma Thila are the headline sites.
• Ari Atoll. Whale sharks year-round at the southern end (Maamigili). The big draw if you want a near-guaranteed shark encounter, though sightings remain wild and not staged.
• Baa Atoll. Hanifaru Bay is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the largest known manta feeding aggregation in the world — 100+ mantas in cyclone-feeding formation, June-November. Snorkel only at Hanifaru itself (no scuba permitted), but the surrounding atoll has full dive sites.
• Vaavu Atoll. Sharks — grey reefs, white tips, and the well-known Alimathaa night dive with nurse sharks. Quieter than the central atolls.
• Fuvahmulah. A standalone island far south, reached by domestic flight. Tiger sharks on every dive, scalloped hammerhead schools in season (December-May), thresher sharks. Advanced only — depth, current, and the animals demand it.
• Southern atolls (Huvadhoo, Addu). Remote, premium liveaboards only. Channel diving with large pelagics and minimal other boats. Long itineraries (10 nights) needed to justify the transit.

Conditions

Water temperature 27-29 °C year-round. A 3 mm wetsuit is comfortable; some divers use 5 mm on multi-dive liveaboard days. Visibility 20-40 metres depending on side, season, and plankton.

Currents are the defining feature. Most Maldives diving is drift diving in atoll channels — you drop in upcurrent, ride through with the water, and surface where the boat picks you up. This is not optional and not always gentle. Currents at South Malé and Vaavu channels can run 2-3 knots. Standard protocol:

• Surface marker buoy (SMB) on every diver
• Reef hook for waiting at cleaning stations (mantas, sharks)
• Negative entries to drop fast and avoid getting blown off the site
• Stay close to the guide; the group disperses fast in current

If you are newly certified and want calm water, the Maldives is not the right destination. Book Bali or Koh Tao first, get 30-40 dives logged, then come back.

Cost reality

A realistic budget for a week of diving here:

• Resort-based week, low-mid end: $3,500-5,000 per person including flights from Europe, transfer, room, full board, and 10 dives.
• Liveaboard week, mid-range: $4,000-6,500 per person all in.
• Premium resort week (Soneva, Six Senses, One&Only): $10,000+ per person.

Day-to-day extras add up: drinks (alcohol is heavily taxed), seaplane transfers, GST and service charges (24% combined), and equipment rental if your gear is older. Bring your own regulator and computer; resort rental is $40-60/day.

Practical notes

• Currency. US dollars and euros are accepted everywhere; Maldivian rufiyaa is essentially unused by tourists. Pricing on this site is shown in THB-equivalent for comparison, but you will pay in USD or EUR locally.
• Alcohol is illegal on inhabited (local) islands. Resorts and liveaboards serve it freely. Bringing alcohol through customs is prohibited.
• Dive insurance is required by most operators. DAN Asia Pacific or DAN Europe is standard.
• Single-use plastics are restricted at most resorts; bring a refillable water bottle.
• Seaplane luggage limits are tighter than international flights — usually 20 kg checked plus 5 kg hand. Dive gear in soft bags compresses better than hard cases.
