The risk of being seriously injured by a shark on a scuba dive is somewhere around 1 in 100 million per dive. You took a much bigger risk getting to the dive site. The sharks that actually bite people — bull, tiger, great white — are not the species you encounter at typical recreational dive sites. The reef sharks at Koh Tao, the Maldives, and most of Southeast Asia have a track record measured in zero diver fatalities for entire countries across entire decades.
The honest TL;DR
The fear of being eaten by a shark is older than the brain that’s afraid. We evolved on plains and in forests, where being eaten was a real risk a daily basis. Our nervous system files “large fish with teeth” under the same threat label as “large cat with teeth,” even though the data say one of these things kills hundreds of millions of times less often than the other.
Look at the actual numbers and the picture flips entirely. Sharks don’t hunt scuba divers. They mostly don’t even acknowledge us. When the worst happens, the diver was either spearfishing (carrying speared fish), on a baited dive (food in the water), or in conditions where a shark mistook them for something else (murky water, surface position, low light). None of that describes the typical recreational reef dive.
The numbers, plainly
The International Shark Attack File (ISAF), kept by the Florida Museum of Natural History since the 1950s, is the global registry for shark-human incidents. It catalogs everything investigators can verify — including the activity, location, species (when known), and outcome.

The denominator is the part nobody quotes. ISAF and adjacent statistics record incidents, not dives. PADI alone certifies roughly a million new divers a year, on top of the existing pool of tens of millions of active divers worldwide. Conservative estimates put global recreational diving at 100 million dives annually, and many estimates run higher.
Divide a handful of incidents by 100 million dives and the per-dive probability lands in the range of 1 in 10 million to 1 in 100 million, depending on how you draw the lines. The fatal-incident probability is lower still — close to the level of being struck by lightning while underwater, which is a comparison that should give you a sense of the scale.
For context: the per-person annual lifetime risk of dying in a car accident in the US is roughly 1 in 100. The relevant comparison isn’t sharks-vs-not-diving. It’s the things you don’t think twice about doing.
Why the perception is so badly broken
The shark-attack fear is not random. It’s a textbook case of how the brain weights information badly.
- Jaws (1975) rewired a generation. Spielberg made a horror movie that happens to feature a shark. The shark behaves like a horror-movie monster, not a real shark. The cultural imprint is still there 50 years later.
- News follows incidents, not denominators. Every serious shark bite makes international headlines. The 100 million dives that ended uneventfully don’t. Repeat that asymmetry for decades and the median person’s mental probability is wildly off.
- Evolutionary salience. Being eaten alive is a uniquely vivid threat. Our ancestors who feared big predators left more descendants than those who didn’t. The wiring is older than statistics.
- The unseen-below-the-surface factor. A car accident is a known shape of danger. The ocean below 5 metres is opaque to most people. The brain fills the void with monsters because monsters are easier to imagine than nothing.
- Documentary editing. Even nature documentaries showing shark behaviour cut for tension. You see the moment a shark turns toward the cage; you don’t see the 50 minutes it ignored everything.
Once you’ve sat on the bottom and had a 1.5-metre blacktip reef shark glide past at three metres’ distance without breaking pattern, the fear loses most of its grip. They aren’t interested. They have actual fish to eat.
Which sharks actually bite people
A reasonable rule of thumb: roughly 80% of recorded unprovoked attacks on humans involve three species — bull sharks, tiger sharks, and great whites. These are the species with the size, dentition, and willingness to test a human-shaped object. They are responsible for the great majority of fatal incidents.
None of these are typical recreational dive sharks.
- Bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) live in coastal and brackish water, often in murky river mouths and harbours. They show up on some dive sites (Beqa Lagoon in Fiji, Playa del Carmen baited dives) but generally not on standard tropical reef dives. They’re the most behaviourally aggressive shark and the most likely to test a human.
- Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are pelagic, opportunistic generalists. They show up at deep blue-water dive sites — Tiger Beach in the Bahamas, parts of Hawaii, some Australian sites — usually as the target of dedicated shark dives. They’re not present at typical reef sites.
- Great whites (Carcharodon carcharias) are cold-water apex predators concentrated in specific regions: South African coast, southern Australia, California, Cape Cod, and parts of the Mediterranean. Almost no recreational divers encounter them without specifically going to a cage dive.
The contrast with what divers actually see at common Asian, Pacific, and Caribbean reef sites is stark.
What you actually see at typical dive sites
Most dive sites in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Maldives, Egypt, the Caribbean, and similar regions have a recurring cast of reef shark species. The diver-incident records for these species are functionally zero.
- Whitetip reef shark (Triaenodon obesus) — a 1.5-metre slow-moving reef resident that spends most of the day asleep on the bottom in caves and overhangs. Verified unprovoked attacks: vanishingly rare. Total recorded human fatalities globally: effectively zero.
- Blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) — the small shark you see in shallow flats and reef edges. Skittish around divers. Verified attacks usually involve standing in shallow water with fish on a stringer, not scuba diving.
- Leopard shark / Zebra shark (Stegostoma fasciatum) — slow, bottom-dwelling, mostly nocturnal feeder on shellfish. Effectively zero attack record on divers.
- Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) — slow, suction-feeding, lethargic. The only meaningful bite cases involve people grabbing their tails. Don’t grab their tails.
- Wobbegongs — Australian carpet sharks. Bites happen, almost exclusively when divers step on or harass them. Treat them like big stinging carpets and they’re harmless.
- Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) — the biggest fish in the sea, totally harmless plankton feeders, the highlight of many divers’ careers.
- Grey reef shark (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) — present at deeper Indo-Pacific sites. Can be territorial near reef edges. Bites on divers are uncommon and almost always preceded by clear warning postures (arched back, pectoral fins down) that experienced divemasters recognise.
None of these is on the “things that bite people” shortlist. Whitetips, blacktips, leopards, nurses, wobbegongs, and whale sharks have collectively bitten so few recreational scuba divers that you can list the verified incidents per decade on one hand.
When sharks do bite divers — the pattern
Look at the small number of cases where a scuba diver has been seriously bitten and a pattern emerges. It isn’t random.
- Spearfishing. Speared fish struggling on a stringer is the strongest known shark-attractant for divers. A scuba diver carrying bleeding fish is doing something measurably more dangerous than a scuba diver with no fish.
- Baited shark dives. Operators in some destinations chum the water specifically to bring sharks in for clients. These are managed environments with documented protocols and very low incident rates, but the dives where divers get bitten by big sharks are nearly always these dives, not standard reef dives.
- Surface swimming, especially at dawn or dusk. Many shark species feed at low light. Splashing on the surface at sunset is the closest a recreational diver gets to mimicking a wounded animal. Get down quickly; stay down; ascend properly.
- Poor visibility. Murky water at river mouths and turbid estuaries puts bull sharks and tigers in close proximity to surface activity. Reef dives in good visibility do not.
- Provocation. Touching, grabbing, riding, harassing, or attempting to pet a shark goes badly. The “unprovoked” filter in ISAF specifically excludes these cases — but they are a non-trivial slice of total shark-human incidents.
- Spearfish-trained sharks at specific sites. A few sites worldwide have habituated shark populations that associate divers with food because of long-running spearfishing pressure or unauthorised feeding. These are known by name in the dive community.
If you’re not spearfishing, not on a baited dive, not surface swimming at dusk, not in murky water, and not provoking the animal, you’ve eliminated almost every situation in which a recreational diver has been bitten by a shark.
What to do if a shark approaches you
Most divers wish a shark would approach. If one does, the protocol is straightforward and works.
- Stop. Stay vertical. Face the animal. Sharks are ambush predators that prefer prey moving away from them. Turning to face removes the ambush trigger.
- Stay calm and breathe slowly. Erratic breathing means erratic bubbles and erratic movement, both of which look prey-like.
- If the shark is genuinely close, extend an object — a camera, a fin, a slate — gently toward it. Most sharks will divert. They are not committed to eye contact and prefer to leave.
- Watch for warning postures. Arched back, pectoral fins angled down, exaggerated swimming pattern — these mean the shark is uncomfortable and you should back off. This is overwhelmingly a grey reef or silvertip behaviour and an experienced divemaster will recognise it instantly.
- Ascend if you genuinely want to leave, but ascend properly — controlled rate, safety stop, stay with your buddy. Bolting to the surface is much more dangerous than the shark.
The number of shark-related diving incidents that have ended badly because the diver panicked into a rapid ascent and got bent is non-trivial. The shark didn’t kill them. The panic did.
The actually-bigger risks on a dive
Look at the DAN annual fatality statistics and the leading causes of recreational diver death year after year are not sharks. They are:
- Cardiac events (especially in older divers with undiagnosed heart conditions)
- Drowning secondary to running out of air, panic, or equipment failure
- Arterial gas embolism from rapid ascents and breath-holding
- Decompression sickness from missed safety stops or rapid ascents
- Boat-strike injuries at the surface, often from missed pickups
- Failure to plan dive within limits (depth, time, gas mix)
Sharks don’t make the top 10. They’re a rounding error against routine recreational dive risk.
Specific destinations and shark probability
A few data points for common diving regions.
- Koh Tao, Thailand: the resident “shark” experience is a 1.5-metre blacktip reef shark or, on lucky days, a passing whale shark. Verified diver fatalities from any shark on Koh Tao in modern history: zero. The risk that gets people on Koh Tao is panic on the way up from a deep specialty dive, not animals.
- Maldives: much more shark activity than Thailand — grey reef, whitetip, blacktip, nurse, occasional bull. Diver fatalities from sharks remain extremely rare. Tourists go specifically to see them.
- Egypt, Red Sea: longimanus (oceanic whitetip) is the species of note. Incidents are uncommon but have happened, including a high-profile fatality in Sharm El Sheikh in 2022 involving a swimmer. Scuba diver fatalities remain in the low single digits across the entire region’s diving history.
- Caribbean: mostly reef sharks, nurses, occasional Caribbean reef shark. Diver incidents are vanishingly rare.
- Australia / Pacific: bull, tiger, and great white incidents occur — almost always involving surfers and swimmers, not scuba divers.
The shark-tourism economy needs sharks not to attack
A point that doesn’t get made enough: the global shark-diving industry — Beqa Lagoon, Tiger Beach, Cocos Island, Galapagos, Maldives, South Africa cage dives, Bahamas — exists because sharks reliably do not attack divers. The economic argument has now become a major conservation argument. A live reef shark generates more tourism income over its lifetime than a dead one is worth at market.
The industry would collapse if sharks were dangerous. The fact that it grows every year is itself evidence.
What this means in practice
Be afraid of the right things. Plan your dive. Watch your gas. Ascend slowly. Don’t dive sick or hungover. Don’t push your limits. Listen to your divemaster. Don’t grab marine life.
The shark, if you’re lucky enough to see one, is the part of the day you’ll tell stories about for years. Not because it tried to eat you. Because it didn’t.
