Why Koh Tao
Koh Tao is small (21 km²) but punches above its weight: an estimated 50,000+ PADI certifications per year, mostly Open Water. Prices are tightly clustered across shops (Open Water typically 9,800–11,500 THB) so the real choice is about group size, instructor experience, accommodation included, language support, and post-course community.
The island’s strength is its diversity of teaching styles rather than diversity of dive sites. Most shops dive the same 15–20 sites — Chumphon Pinnacle, Sail Rock, Twins, White Rock, Japanese Gardens — but how they teach differs enormously.

- Anyone wanting strong currents, big pelagics, or rare macro — Komodo, Lembeh or Raja Ampat fit better
- Those who don’t enjoy backpacker/social atmosphere
Conditions
Water 27–29°C year-round (3 mm wetsuit sufficient). Visibility 10–25 m depending on plankton bloom and season. Currents are generally mild, occasionally moderate at Sail Rock and Chumphon Pinnacle. Whale shark sightings peak March–May.
Practical notes
- ATMs widely available, but bring cash for many dive shops
- Most shops offer pickup from ferry pier free of charge
- Sairee Beach is the main hub for nightlife and most dive shops
- Mae Haad is quieter, closer to ferry
- Chalok Baan Kao in the south is the quietest area
