You don't need to own a dive computer to start. Rentals are fine for your Open Water course and your first 20-30 dives. Once you're going on more than one trip a year, doing a liveaboard, or moving past basic Advanced-level diving, buy your own. Budget 8,000-25,000 THB ($230-700) for a recreational model that will last you 5-10 years. Skip the smartwatch hybrids and anything marketing "lifestyle features" — get a unit that's good at the actual dive computer job.
Why a dive computer matters
A dive computer does four things, continuously, every second you’re underwater:
- Tracks your depth (and your max depth on the dive)
- Tracks your bottom time
- Calculates your no-decompression limit (NDL) — how much longer you can stay before mandatory stops
- Monitors your ascent rate and warns you if you’re going up too fast
It replaces the printed dive tables nobody actually uses past day three of their Open Water course. It does the nitrogen-loading math in real time, accounting for the multi-level profile of an actual dive (you rarely sit at exactly one depth — you swim a reef that goes 8m, 14m, 22m, 18m, 10m). Tables can’t handle that. A computer can.
It’s the single most safety-critical piece of personal kit you’ll buy. Mask, fins, BCD — those affect comfort. The computer affects whether you stay within the limits that keep nitrogen from forming bubbles in your bloodstream.
When to buy your own
There’s a real argument for renting for a while. Computers are expensive, you might decide diving isn’t for you, and dive shops include them in course fees anyway. Rent until at least one of these is true:
- You’re going on more than 1-2 dive trips a year
- You’ve booked, or plan to book, a liveaboard (rental units rotate between guests and reset their nitrogen tracking — you want continuity across all your dives in a week)
- You’re moving into nitrox or advanced/deep diving where the unit’s algorithm and gas settings start to matter
- You want to log your dives properly via app sync rather than scribbling depths into a paper logbook three days later
If none of these apply, keep renting. If two or more do, it’s time.

In USD: roughly $170-340 entry, $340-700 mid, $700-1,400 tech-capable. In EUR the numbers are close to the dollar figures.
Entry tier gets you a reliable, single-button or two-button unit with nitrox support up to 40% and basic logging. No air-integration, no color screen, no compass. That’s fine — none of those are required for safe recreational diving.
Mid tier adds a color screen (much easier to read in murky water), wireless air-integration (a tank pressure transmitter sends your remaining air to the computer’s display), digital compass, and decent battery life. This is where most recreational divers should land if they have the budget.
Tech-capable means the same form factor will keep working when you get into trimix, multiple deco gases, and CCR (closed-circuit rebreather) diving. Worth it only if you’re seriously considering tec later.
Recommended starter kit
These are units we’ve seen on Koh Tao and at shops across SE Asia that we’d buy ourselves:
Entry tier
- Mares Puck Pro+ — ~5,500-7,500 THB. Single button, monochrome screen, nitrox up to 99%, user-replaceable battery. The default first computer for thousands of new divers. Not pretty, but does the job for a decade.
- Suunto Zoop Novo — ~6,500-8,000 THB. Suunto’s competitor at the same price. Slightly more conservative algorithm (the RGBM variant), four buttons, fine to read. The Suunto and the Mares Puck are the two units you’ll see most often on rental shelves.
Best mid-tier pick
- Shearwater Peregrine — ~12,000-15,000 THB. Color screen, multiple-gas capable (so you can grow into tec without buying a new unit), Bühlmann ZHL-16C algorithm with adjustable gradient factors, USB-C rechargeable, brilliant readability. The dive industry’s quiet favorite — instructors and divemasters often pick this as their personal unit.
Mid recreational with all features
If you want wireless air-integration and a polished consumer experience:
- Garmin Descent G1 / Mk3 — smartwatch form factor, full GPS surface mode, solid algorithm. Pricey but does double duty as a daily-wear watch.
- Suunto D5 — wrist computer with color screen and optional wireless AI. Slick, but battery life is the weak point.
- Mares Genius — large screen, full tec-capable, less commonly seen.
What features actually matter
Sales pages list 30+ features. Most don’t matter for recreational diving. Here’s the honest read:
Worth paying for:
- Color screen. Easier to read in low-vis, easier to read at depth where the warm wavelengths drop off. The biggest quality-of-life upgrade going from entry to mid tier.
- Smartphone app sync (Bluetooth, sometimes via dock). Your dive log builds itself. Skipping the paper logbook saves real time and remembers detail you’ll forget after dive #50.
- User-replaceable battery. Saves you 1,500-3,000 THB every 1-2 years on shop battery swaps. Many entry computers offer this; some mid-tier ones don’t.
- Adjustable algorithm conservatism. The ability to set the unit more conservative (more padding) as you age, dive cold, or feel less fit on a given day.
Nice but not essential:
- Wireless air-integration. Useful — you see your remaining air on the same screen as depth and NDL — but adds $200-400 to the cost (transmitter + computer upgrade). Many experienced divers prefer a separate analog SPG (submersible pressure gauge) for redundancy.
- Digital compass. Helpful for navigation. The cheap option: a separate $30 wrist compass. The convenient option: built into the computer.
Mostly hype:
- Surface GPS. Only useful topside (the GPS signal doesn’t work underwater). Nice for tracking surface intervals on boats, not safety-critical.
- Tide tables and weather features. Your phone does this better. Stop paying for it on a dive computer.
- “Lifestyle” smartwatch hybrids. Many of the watches that market themselves as both daily-wear and dive computers do neither job particularly well. The Garmin Descent line is the exception — most others are compromises. If you wouldn’t wear it as a daily watch anyway, get a dedicated dive computer instead.
Algorithms — the bit nobody explains
Every dive computer uses a decompression algorithm to model nitrogen loading and unloading in your tissues. The three you’ll see:
- Bühlmann ZHL-16 — the standard. Used by Shearwater, most modern Mares, and many others. Mathematically well-understood, easy to tune via “gradient factors” if you want more or less conservatism.
- RGBM (Reduced Gradient Bubble Model) — Suunto’s variant. More conservative for repetitive and multi-day diving. Some experienced divers find it overly cautious; some appreciate the padding.
- DSAT / PADI’s — used in PADI’s recreational tables and some older PADI-branded computers. Most lenient of the three on no-deco time.
Most modern computers let you pick between conservative, normal, and liberal settings, or directly adjust gradient factors. Don’t fret over the algorithm choice when picking a computer. Pick a reputable brand, learn its quirks, and stay within its limits.
What to skip entirely
- Computers without a depth alarm and ascent rate alarm. Both are non-negotiable.
- Watches that “also dive” but lack a proper deco mode. A standard dive watch (Seiko, Citizen) tells you depth and time but doesn’t do nitrogen tracking. That’s not a dive computer.
- Used computers without service history. Algorithm chips don’t fail often, but pressure sensors do. Buying secondhand without knowing the dive count and service status is gambling on a safety device.
Service and lifespan
Most dive computers want a service every 2 years — usually a battery, O-ring, and pressure-sensor calibration check. Costs roughly 1,500-3,000 THB ($45-90).
A well-cared-for unit lasts 5-10 years. The Shearwater Peregrine and the Mares Puck line both have a reputation for 10+ year lifespans with normal recreational use.
Rinse with fresh water after every dive. Don’t leave it in direct sun on the boat between dives. Don’t let salt crystallize on the buttons. Those three rules cover 90% of preventable computer deaths.
Where to buy
In rough order of value:
- Bring it from home. If you live in the US, EU, UK, Australia, or Japan, your local dive shop or online retailer is often cheaper than buying in Thailand. Personal-use imports under roughly $200 are typically duty-free into Thailand.
- Lazada Thailand / Shopee. Surprisingly competitive on Mares and some Suunto units. Check the seller is an authorized dealer for warranty.
- Phuket dive shops — wider selection than Koh Tao, often a bit cheaper, and more chance of negotiation.
- Koh Tao dive shops — convenient if you’re already there, but markup is real. Worth it if you want to try the unit in person before paying.
- Manufacturer direct (Shearwater, Garmin) — fixed pricing, full warranty, slow shipping. Solid option for the Peregrine specifically.
Final pick by budget
- Tight budget, just want it to work: Mares Puck Pro+. ~6,500 THB. Will outlast your interest in this hobby.
- Sweet spot: Shearwater Peregrine. ~13,000 THB. Best-in-class recreational computer that grows with you.
- Want a watch you’ll also wear daily: Garmin Descent G1. ~25,000 THB. Genuinely good at both jobs.
- Going technical eventually: Shearwater Perdix 2 or Teric. ~30,000-40,000 THB. Industry standard.
Try before you buy
Several Koh Tao shops will let you rent a specific computer (Shearwater, Suunto D5, Garmin Descent) on a fun dive to feel the interface before committing. Worth doing if you’re spending more than 15,000 THB.
If you’re not sure yet whether you’ll be diving enough to justify owning, just keep renting. The shop’s unit is fine. Buy when you outgrow renting — not before.
