Water conducts heat about 25× faster than air, so 26°C water feels cold after 45 minutes in a way 26°C air never would. For most tropical destinations (Caribbean, Maldives, Thailand, Philippines), a 3mm full wetsuit is the right call — not the shorty you're tempted to bring. For Egypt and Indonesia, plan 3mm for summer and 5mm for winter or deep dives. For the Mediterranean, California, UK, Sweden, and Iceland, you're in 5mm hooded, 7mm, or drysuit territory year-round. Get this wrong and your dive ends early, your air consumption spikes, and your decompression risk goes up.
The physics: why warm water still chills you
Air at 26°C feels comfortable. Water at 26°C feels cold after 30–45 minutes underwater. The difference is thermal conductivity — water conducts heat away from your body roughly 25 times faster than air at the same temperature.
Three other physical factors compound this:
- You’re breathing cold gas. Compressed air leaves your tank close to ambient water temperature, then expands at the regulator, dropping further. Each breath carries heat out of your lungs.
- You’re moving slowly. Your metabolism isn’t generating much heat. Compare to swimming at the surface in the same water — you’d be warmer because you’re working harder.
- You’re often at depth, where it’s colder. Thermoclines can drop water temperature 5–8°C below surface temperature on a single dive.
This is why divers who do back-to-back 60-minute dives in “warm” water still feel cold by dive three. The cumulative heat loss adds up across the day.

The ranges below are based on satellite sea-surface-temperature data (NOAA, Copernicus) plus dive-operator reports. Surface temperature is one thing — diving temperature at 20–30m can be several degrees colder. I’ve noted thermocline behaviour where it matters.

What each wetsuit thickness actually does
Wetsuit thickness sales pitches are vague. Here’s what each thickness genuinely buys you in real water:
The biggest mistakes by destination
”I’m going to Bali, I’ll bring a 3mm shorty”
This is the most common mistake on Indonesia trips. Surface temperature in Bali is 26–28°C, which makes shorty seem fine. But:
- Tulamben (USS Liberty wreck) has a thermocline at 18–22m where temperature drops to 22–24°C
- Nusa Penida (Manta Point, Crystal Bay) has thermoclines down to 18–20°C
- Komodo current sites can drop to 19°C below 15m
You’ll spend the deep portion of every dive cold. After three dives a day, you’ll be shivering. The right kit is a 5mm full suit, sometimes with a hooded vest for Nusa Penida and Komodo. Reserve the shorty for north Bali (Lovina, Pemuteran) where thermoclines are mild.
”Egypt is hot, the water must be warm”
In summer (May–September), the Red Sea is 26–29°C and a 3mm full is perfect. In winter (December–February), the surface drops to 21–23°C and deep dives at 30m can hit 19–20°C. On a 5-night liveaboard in February with 4 dives a day, a 3mm becomes punishing. Bring a 5mm full plus a hooded vest for liveaboards October through March.
”Mediterranean in summer = warm”
Surface temperature in Greek or Croatian summer can hit 26°C. Beautiful. But the Med has aggressive thermoclines. At 25m you might hit 17–19°C. At 35m on a wreck dive, 16°C is normal. A 5mm full is the minimum; many local divers wear a 5mm with a hooded vest year-round.
”California is in the US, it’ll be like Florida”
California water is cold. The Pacific is cold. Monterey in July is 12–15°C. The Channel Islands in October can be 18°C, but in February it’s 12°C. Either you commit to a 7mm hooded suit or a drysuit. Anything else and you’re done after dive one.
”Iceland’s Silfra is freshwater, it’ll be different”
Silfra is glacier meltwater at 2–4°C year-round. Air temperature varies but water temperature does not. This is colder than the North Atlantic in winter. A drysuit with a heavy 400g undersuit is non-negotiable. Most divers add dry gloves. Dive time is typically capped at 35–45 minutes by cold, not by air or deco.
”I’m doing UK summer, 5mm should be okay”
UK water peaks at 16–17°C in August in the south and 12–14°C in Scotland. A 5mm wetsuit will get you through one dive. Two dives in a day will leave you hypothermic. Even in August, a drysuit is standard for UK divers. If you only have a 5mm, dive once per day, stay shallow, and have warm clothes ready immediately at the surface.
When 3mm isn’t enough at “warm” destinations
Even in genuinely tropical destinations, conditions can outpace a 3mm:
Cold-water-specific gear
Once you cross below ~18°C, the gear list gets longer. What actually matters:
Hood
Single most impactful cold-water item. The head loses heat faster than any other body part because of vascular density and lack of fat insulation. A 5mm hood adds 30–60 minutes of comfort. A hooded vest (the 2mm vest with attached 5mm hood) is the single best add-on for marginal water.
Brands worth considering: O’Neill, Henderson, Bare, Waterproof, Fourth Element. Fit matters more than brand.
Gloves
5mm wet gloves work down to about 12°C. Below that, dry gloves on a drysuit are dramatically better. Three-finger lobster mitts are warmest but worst for dexterity. Five-finger gloves are warmer than dry gloves with ring system if you have well-fitting wet gloves.
For freshwater diving below 8°C, dry gloves are non-negotiable. Fingers in 4°C water in wet gloves go numb in about 10 minutes.
Hood pee valves (and why drysuit hoods help)
In a drysuit, the head is the only exposed-to-water part. A neoprene drysuit hood adds significant insulation. The drysuit itself isolates the rest of your body from water.
Heated undersuit
For ice diving, Silfra, and serious cold-water tech: battery-heated vest or shirt under the drysuit. Santi, Fourth Element, and Thermalution make 8-hour battery vests in the €400–800 range. Worth it if you dive cold water regularly.
Dry boots vs wet booties
For drysuits: dedicated dry boots integrated to the suit, or rock boots over neoprene socks. Dry boots are warmer; rock boots are more practical for shore entries on rocky coasts.
Undersuit weight (Thinsulate g/m²)
This is the metric that matters for drysuit insulation:
- 200g undersuit: 12–18°C water, suitable for UK summer
- 300g undersuit: 8–14°C, UK shoulder seasons
- 400g undersuit: 4–10°C, Scandinavia, Silfra, BC winter
- Thinsulate-equivalent fleece undersuits are cheaper and almost as warm but slower to dry between dives
How to tell if you’re actually cold (not just chilly)
There’s a difference between “this is uncomfortable” and “this is dangerous.” Signs to monitor on yourself and your buddy:
The dangerous transition is the third row — when shivering stops despite continued cold exposure. This means the body has exhausted its compensation. End the dive immediately and get into warm clothes and warm fluids.
Practical packing rules
If you’re packing for an unknown trip and the operator hasn’t been clear:
- Tropical (Caribbean, Maldives, Thailand, Philippines, Egypt summer): 3mm full suit, optional 2mm hood for night dives. Skip the shorty.
- Tropical with depth/thermocline (Bali, Komodo, Galapagos): 5mm full suit + optional hooded vest. Don’t trust the brochure temperature.
- Subtropical (Mediterranean, Australia, Egypt winter, Sodwana): 5mm full + hooded vest. Bring gloves for liveaboards.
- Temperate (California, UK summer, BC summer, Spain winter): 7mm hooded + gloves OR drysuit. Decide based on number of dives per day.
- Cold water (UK winter, Norway, Sweden, BC winter, Iceland): Drysuit + appropriate undersuit + dry gloves + drysuit-certification card.
When in doubt, ask the operator: “What thickness do most of your customers wear in [this month], and how much do they regret it?” The honest answer is informative.
The verdict
Water temperature is the single most underestimated factor in dive comfort. People obsess over dive computers and BCD brands, then show up in Bali with a shorty and wonder why they’re shivering on dive three.
The 25× heat conductivity multiplier is non-negotiable physics. Even “warm” water in the Maldives strips heat fast enough that an 80-minute liveaboard dive feels cold by minute 60 in a shorty. Thermoclines turn nominally-tropical sites into cold-water sites at depth. Long dives, slow dives, deep dives, and night dives all amplify the cold.
The fix is unspectacular: go one millimetre thicker than the brochure suggests, add a hooded vest as a free insurance policy, and respect the destinations where wetsuits stop being enough. Diving cold is preventable. Toughing it out is not a strategy — it just shortens your dives and increases your air consumption and DCS risk.
