Why Phuket
Phuket has the biggest dive infrastructure in Thailand. More boats, more operators, more sites within range. The trade-off: it’s not a “dive island” in the way Koh Tao is. Diving is one of many things tourists do here, and dive shops compete with nightlife, beach clubs, and elephant sanctuaries for your time. Prices reflect this — slightly higher than Koh Tao for the equivalent course, but with more variety in what you can do.
What Phuket gives you that Koh Tao doesn’t:
- Liveaboard access. Most Similan and Mergui liveaboards depart from Chalong or Khao Lak (1h drive north). You can dock-to-water faster than from Koh Tao.
- More site variety. Phi Phi, Racha Yai, Racha Noi, Shark Point, Anemone Reef, the King Cruiser wreck — all within day-trip range.
- Tech diving infrastructure. Several shops run technical training (trimix, sidemount, rebreather) with proper support boats.
- The IDC capital of Thailand. More PADI Course Directors operate from Phuket than anywhere else in the country.
What Koh Tao gives you that Phuket doesn’t:
- Cheaper Open Water (about 10–15% less)
- More intimate shop culture
- Shorter boat rides to training sites
- Stronger social scene for new divers
When to go
Mid-November to April is the dive season. The Similan/Surin national parks open mid-November and close mid-May, which dictates the liveaboard calendar. Day trips run year-round but quality drops May–October during the southwest monsoon. The Racha Islands and Phi Phi can be dived in any season, but visibility and swell get worse.
Best visibility: February and March (20–30 metres at the better sites). Whale shark window: February–April, with peak sightings at Richelieu Rock (liveaboard only). Lowest tourist density: September–early November.
Conditions
Water 28–30 °C all year. Visibility 10–25 metres depending on site, season, and recent rainfall. Currents at Shark Point and Phi Phi can be moderate; nothing like Komodo. A 3 mm wetsuit is enough.
Practical notes
- Patong is where most international divers stay; busy, with full nightlife.
- Karon and Kata are quieter beach options 10–15 min south.
- Chalong is the dive marina hub — many shops are based here even if they sell from Patong shopfronts.
- A Songkran (mid-April) booking means partial closures and water-fight chaos in town.
- The 2-hour boat ride to Phi Phi from Phuket can be rough; bring motion-sickness pills if you’re not used to open water.
